Bell Ringers
As part of the Bicentenary Celebrations our ringing team led by tower captain, Frank Roebuck, rang a Quarter Peal, 'Grandshire Doubles' on Saturday 25th April. The peal uses six of our church bells and lasted about 48 minutes. The date was chosen to co-incide with the 200 Years Heritage Exhibition - what a way it was to broadcast our presence in Whitefield since 1826!
A full peal, on eight bells consists of 5,040 changes in the sequence of the bells, hence to qualify as a quarter peal there must be a non-stop sequence of at least 1,260 changes.
There are literally hundreds of 'methods' for full peals, a method being the definition of the bell order for each change of sequence. There are also many options for a quarter peal and on this occasion the choice was 'Grandshire Doubles'.
Three of the ringers are Stand's own ringers- Andrew, Martin and Lukas and three were invited to join us , two from St. Leonards in Middleton and one from St. Pauls in Ramsbottom.
The ring actually involved 1,320 changes and took 48 minutes to complete.
